We had a chat with Lasse Simonsen, Product Manager for DCO, to find out what is next for DCO, how those feature requests are handled, and what makes him tick in his spare time. This is your chance to get inside the head of a Product Manager.
Q: How would you describe your role as a Product Manager?
A: I’m like an octopus. I have tentacles reaching out to share information with all the groups that have an interest in DCO - marketing, sales, engineering, and most importantly; our partners and customers. I work closely with engineering to prioritize and plan the content of upcoming releases. We are always looking for new opportunities for DCO and our other DCIM products.
Q: How are feature requests handled?
A: It all starts with requests from customers, sent to the DCIM Support site, or discussed during customer meetings with me or with our team in the field. Our customer support specialists review each one, then we create entries in a dedicated system. Customers get an email with a unique request ID. I have weekly meetings with engineering program managers where we do an initial review of the requests. When planning new releases, we select the most requested and relevant features which fit the direction of the next release.
Q: What’s up next for DCO?
A: Tenant Portal! It is a feature that allows a colocation provider to give their customers access to DCO to see their own cages, racks, and servers. It will be web-based, our first take on a thin client requested by many of our customers. This will also benefit other DCO users, as they will have access to some of the DCO features via web browser.
Q: Are you moving from thick to thin client? Will that require customers to move to thin client at some point?
A: Ideally, yes. But we will take it step by step. I don’t think a thick client will completely go away in the near future. A technical reason is some of our calculations are pretty heavy and don’t perform well in a web browser. Until we make a complete product in a web browser, there will be two ways to use DCO – the thick client, and a web-based application with a limited feature set that will grow with every release. After we release the first version of the thin client with the Tenant Portal later this year, we will start moving more and more features into the thin client and remove them from the thick client. Eventually, only the core features that are too heavy to run in a web browser will remain in the thick client.
Q: What value do you see in the DCIM Support Community?
A: Questions allow me to understand what people struggle with and what their needs are, so I see it as a source of information. It’s a good learning opportunity for us.
Q: How has DCO changed over time?
A: It’s become more stable and scales much better with bigger solutions. There was a lot of focus on scalability and security, because our customers have become much bigger. We have been working on stability, scalability and security for the last year or two. We’ve also added a lot of new features and improved existing features. While we still have areas that need improvement, I firmly believe the foundation for a good product is already there.
Q: What do you do when you’re not at work? Any hobbies?
A: I enjoy travelling and experiencing different places and cultures – something that I fortunately sometimes get to experience with my work-related travels. On a more daily basis, I enjoy hanging out in my garden, and running or hiking in the local countryside.
